Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko

Alongside directing Komi-san Can’t Communicate (Streamed on Netflix), Ayumu Watanabe arrives at American theaters with Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko. The movie is centered around the relationship between 38-year-old Nikuko and her 11-year-old daughter Kikuko, who live on a boat while having nothing else in common. Kikuko is annoyed by her mother’s easygoing personality as she tries to navigate through her life until a miracle occurs after their secrets are revealed. This slice-of-life film boasts adorable visuals as Kikuko discovers what it’s like growing up and learning your parents are human too.

Revue Starlight: The Movie is a thrilling sequel to the TV series that ended four years ago. The movie follows Karen and Hikari as they dance away in the secret competition beneath their school to achieve the “Top Star” title. While being an idol show at best it had a competitive aspect where everyone is against each other to achieve their goal. As a direct sequel to the TV series, it is highly recommended to watch that before the movie. Since this is a movie about idols, you can definitely expect stunning visuals and music sung by the voice actors themselves, giving fans of the series an early Christmas gift.

Fruits Basket: The Prelude

As the remake of the 2001 Fruits Basket, it has been well-received within the anime industry as one of the best shoujo anime. The story follows Tohru Honda, an orphan girl who meets the Sohma family that are possessed by the Chinese zodiacs and have a curse to turn into their animal forms whenever they are weak or stressed. The movie features Tohru’s parents’ backstory that was both beautiful and tragic. This slice-of-life romance story is full of heartwarming scenes while having depressing topics like domestic abuse and mental illness.

It will also include scenes that take place after the end of the anime as a small treat for the fans of the shojo series.

As they escape they are faced with a supernatural curse that falls upon the nation. This fantasy anime delivers great action and a political story of rebellion while featuring the importance of medical studies in the face of supernatural illnesses. While being on par with a film by Ghibli, you better check out The Deer King.

From the director of Devilman Crybaby, Misaaki Yuasa delivers his final anime before his break from the film industry. His take of the famous Noh performer named Ino-Oh reimagines him as a rockstar in the 14th century. The story of Ino-Oh was left undocumented and became a legendary figure in the preformance industry. In this anime rendition of his story, you can expect the extravagant music with flaming stages and backup dancers that will make you want to bob your head along with its rocking music.
