It looks like birds in flight, but you’ll never guess what these photographs are capturing

In a series called ‘Murmurations,’ French photographer Alain Delorme seemingly captures the flight patterns of birds. The dots in the sky coalesce as they seemingly turn and float in beautiful patterns. But these forms are not a group of birds in flight– they are plastic bags in the wind.

In his essay, Raphaële Bertho called the series, “an improbable blend of the sight of the plastic bag, which in American Beauty (1999) swirls around almost hypnotically, and the vision of The Birds in Hitchcock’s great classic from 1963.”

Rather than these murmurations being the flocks of starlings that one would expect, the shots capture an industrial era murmuration using the commonplace man-made object of the trash bag to imitate the birds’ graceful dance.
