Sunday is Grandparents Day and we’ve got plenty of events to keep your entire family entertained. Take grandma and grandpa out to Hello Kitty Day at the Padres ball game or catch a family flashback flick, make history together by planting trees along the San Diego River or watch dogs surf and compete for the title of “Top Surf Dog.” Read on for the details.

First Friday Arts District
San Diego’s biggest monthly free art walk on the First Friday of every month. Meet working artists, make art, see new exhibitions, enjoy dance, theatre and music performances, discover public art and more! Wander and explore the 28 acre campus with galleries, museums, artist studios, distinctive shops and dining at historic Liberty Station. Fri. Event details.
City Heights
City Heights Lantern Festival
Go enjoy the inaugural City Heights Lantern Festival! Hosted by Vien Dong IV Supermarket, celebrating its 35th anniversary, and its sister supermarket World Foods, celebrating its 15th anniversary, the event also celebrates the community of City Heights, as well as the Children Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival (Tet Trung Thu). What can you expect? Free admission, lion dancing, music, food trucks, children’s lanterns and activities. Sat. Event details.

San Diego River Tree Planting
Be a part of planting 100 new trees along the San Diego River in Santee. Come get your hands dirty digging holes, planting trees, watering and more. This fun event is a great opportunity to make new friends, give back, learn about urban forests and have a lasting effect on people and wildlife. By planting new trees in Walker Preserve you will be improving habitat for local animals and beautifying a local green space. All ages are welcome, tools are provided, no experience necessary, dress in clothes that can get a little dirty, closed toe shoes required, bring plenty of water and wear sun protection. Julian Grape Stomp Festa
Kick off your shoes, roll up your pant legs and indulge in the age old tradition of stomping grapes. Local wineries, breweries and cideries will be offering sips to sample and there will be food and shopping, great music and dancing. It will be a party to remember! Sat. Event details.

KPBS Dinosaur Train
Roar back in time while enjoying this fun character meet and greet. You’ll discover the age of the dinosaurs and the amazing creatures who lived with them through storytimes and hands-on workshops. Sat. Event details.

Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon
Spectators are welcome to lounge on the beach and watch 70 surfing dogs compete for “Top Surf Dog.” There will also be interactive vendor booths, a canine costume contest, sand castle building competition, live music, free kid’s activities and summer fun! The event is free to attend, but donations are encouraged and directly benefit the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center. Sun. Event details.

Family Flashback Film
Angelika Film Center hosts Family Flashback films so you can see your favorite old flicks on the big screen either once again or for the first time. This week’s featured movie is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It’s the adaptation of the first of J.K. Rowling’s popular novels, following Harry Potter, a boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own. The Padres are hosting their first-ever Hello Kitty Day at Petco Park. Hello Kitty herself will be on-hand and fans will have an opportunity to take photos with the global pop icon.
