[feast_advanced_jump_to]Here are a few quick notes about the ingredients in this recipe. You can see a complete list of ingredients and instructions in the recipe card below.
Cucumber - Adding cucumber helps increase hydration and has a purifying effect on the body. The natural detoxifier also adds subtle extra flavor. Use the kind of cucumber you have on hand. English cucumbers, Persian, and garden cucumbers are all great.
Lemon - Lemon and other citrus fruits are great sources of bioactive compounds and are rich in nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin E, and minerals. A great ingredient for boosting the immune system with some bright lemon flavor.
Ginger - Fresh ginger root has a nice spicy flavor plus antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been known to inhibit the production of cholesterol, help with weight management, benefit gastrointestinal motility, and aid digestion.
Water - Our regular H2O is transformed into fruit-infused water in just a couple of hours!
Before you start: Wash the cucumber, and lemon thoroughly to remove any dirt or impurities before using a sharp knife to slice them. Peel the ginger.
Step 1: Take a large pitcher or a large glass jar and add the fresh lemon slices, cucumber slices, and ginger slices to it.
Step 2: Fill the pitcher or mason jar with water, leaving some space at the top for stirring. Use a wooden spoon or a long spoon to gently stir the ingredients together, ensuring they are evenly distributed. Cover and let sit at room temperature for 2 hours before transferring to the refrigerator.
After the infusion time, you can strain it if desired, or leave the ingredients in for added flavor.
Serve the glasses of water over ice cubes and enjoy!
The benefits of drinking water are plenty. Here are some major areas it aids:

]]>Here are my 5 sneakiest tips to being (nearly) zero waste in London (and it’s more than just reusable straws and coffee cups):
This may seem like an obvious one but I had never heard of them until Laura told me. These are shops that have jars of bulk food and sometimes cleaning supplies and beauty items. There are more of them than you might think. You turn up with your containers of choice (I often just use old takeaway tubs) and load up. The shop keeper will charge you by weight and the real surprise is it’s cheaper than a normal supermarket for the most part. I was bowled over by how many cashew nuts I could buy for £2. The zero waste shop I frequent is Harmless in Wood Green which is just 10 minutes walk up the road from me and will soon be moving to a new, bigger location near Hornsey station which is even closer. Have a Google and see if there’s one near you. I recommend checking one out, even if it’s just once for the novelty.
I cannot express how much I love charity shops. They are my go to for clothes, books, kitchenware, and even furniture.
Everything is cheap, you find some really unique and unusual stuff, and all the money goes to charity. What do you have to lose?
Charity shops seem to hang out in nests, who knows why? But some areas of London will be swarming with them and some will have none. The best places in London I know for a charity shop crawl are Muswell Hill Broadway, Deptford, and Wimbledon High Street. My favourite charity shop is Crisis by Finsbury Park station. It’s huge and they have a little cafe along with some really interesting bits and bobs—it feels like a cross between a charity shop and a vintage shop.
My mum would despair of me as a kid because half the things she threw away I would pull from the bin a moment later exclaiming “that’s not rubbish” and incorporate it into some sort of art project or just hoard them under my bed until I needed them for a future art project. Well joke’s on you MOTHER because I was being green ahead of my time. I’ve kept this habit to this day; my bedroom bin is an old gherkin tin I found on the street, I have lots of little tins and broken mugs as planters, and old bottles as vases. I use old jars and takeaway tubs to store my food. This doesn’t mean your living space needs to end up looking like a junkyard. But a few choice bits and bobs can look very interesting and won’t cost you a penny.
I do not like bath bombs. I find they are usually gifted to you by people who don’t know you very well, they have loads of unnecessary packaging, and they stop you from being able to wash your hair in the bath.
For a long time I dismissed Lush as a bathbomb shop—boy was I missing out.
I am totally in love with their shampoo bars and face cleanser bars.
They have loads of other zero waste options too like soap bars, conditioner bars, and yes, bathbombs (if you are so inclined). Not only that but if you do buy something in a tub or bottle, they will reward you for bringing it back when you’re done with it.
Aside from stocking packaging free options, Lush products are free from harmful chemicals and microplastics. This means they will be kind to your skin as well as being kind to the environment when they’re washed down the drain.
One thing that stopped my shopping at Lush was price – £7 seems like a lot for a shampoo bar – but when I weighed up how little I washed my hair and how good the product was / how long it lasted I decided it was well worth it.
Let’s fight back against capitalism!

]]>Another type of acid proven safe for your skin is azelaic acid, which belongs to a category known as dicarboxylic acid. Azelaic acid continues to fly under the radar, but that doesn’t mean you should immediately discount the ingredient. In fact, it may be one of the skincare industry’s best-kept secrets to achieving younger, more radiant-looking skin.
Naturally found in grains, including wheat, rye, and barley, azelaic acid is a topical medicine that treats a variety of skincare concerns. As an antioxidant, it protects the skin by fighting free radicals, which can calm inflammation. In addition to its antioxidant properties, it’s also a powerful antibacterial agent.
Azelaic acid is a leave-on exfoliant that comes in a cream, gel, or foam. Some over-the-counter products contain the ingredient, and a medical provider can prescribe the medication at higher strengths.
Due to its antioxidant and antibacterial properties, azelaic acid is an excellent choice for aging skin. Adding the product to your daily skincare regimen can provide the following skin benefits.
Since azelaic acid is a mild acid, most people generally tolerate it well. However, depending on your skin type, you may notice tingling, itching, or dryness when you start using the medication. These symptoms typically reside on their own after the first few weeks.
“The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension is a super-affordable cream that is hydrating and comfortable on the skin,” says Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse, board-certified dermatologist at SkinSafe Dermatology and Skin Care. The formula is designed to treat dull, uneven skin, as well as acne. In addition to its benefits, the product is vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.
Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster is another option that is affordable and effective, according to Dr. Shainhouse. “Combined with salicylic acid, it is a great option for oily or acne-prone skin types,” she explains. The plant extract, licorice root, is another primary ingredient that plays a role in brightening skin and reducing redness.
Dr. Anna H. Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist who serves on the advisory board for Smart Style Today, recommends a Spain skincare line called Sesderma, stating its products are backed by substantial dermatology research. The Azelac Ru Facial Cleanser contains 10% azelaic acid and can be used 1-2 times per day to control hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone.
Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified dermatologic surgeon at Shafer Clinic, recommends Glo Skin’s Beauty Brightening Serum for addressing uneven skin tone and dark spots. The formula contains a unique blend of three key ingredients: alpha-arbutin, lactic acid, and azelaic acid, which work together to exfoliate dead skin cells, re-texturize, and brighten your skin. And unlike many other skincare products designed to target hyperpigmentation, this serum is hydroquinone-free.
Epionce Lytic Tx comes in four different strengths and combines azelaic acid with the well-known exfoliant salicylic acid. The formula is perfect for normal-combination skin, and it is clinically proven to reduce redness and smooth skin texture when combined with other Epionce facial products. Sydney Givens, a board-certified PA-C and founder of Skincare by Sydney recommends adding the 10% strength to your anti-aging skincare routine.
In addition to azelaic acid, vitamin C is another powerful skincare ingredient that helps fight hyperpigmentation. Check out the skin benefits of vitamin C, along with our favorite vitamin C products.

]]>According to Chipotle, their Sofritas is vegan. They say, Vegans should avoid our meats, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, queso, sour cream, and chipotle-honey vinaigrette. Our tortillas, vegetables, rice, beans, salsas, chips, and guacamole are vegetarian and vegan. Under Lifestyle Bowls (see: https://www.chipotle.com/order/build/lifestyle-bowl), they list as vegan Veggie Full Bowl and Plant Powered Bowl. The Veggie Full Bowl contains: White Rice, Black Beans, Fajita Veggies, Fresh Tomato Salsa, Roasted Chili-Corn Salsa, and Guacamole. The Plant Powered Bowl contains: Supergreens Lettuce Blend, White Rice, Sofritas, Fajita Veggies, Fresh Tomato Salsa, Roasted Chili-Corn Salsa, and Guacamole
Note that under Veggie Burrito Bowl, it comes with guacamole, and you can select brown rice. You have a choice of black beans or pinto beans, and generally you can choose half and half of each type of bean.

Here we are, mid-July, right in the thick of summer, and the living is easy. Dinnertime can be easy too with this dill-icious pasta salad that’s packed with nutrition. Avocado gives this dressing a creamy, ranch-like consistency that clings perfectly to the fusilli noodles; black beans add protein and colourful veggies bring on the vitamins. A pretty perfect summer meal, I would say! It also makes a great side dish for barbequed meats or “not dogs.”
Ingredients
Process avocado in a food processor until smooth.
Add almond milk, vinegar, garlic, onion, and dill, and process until very smooth and creamy. Refrigerate until needed.
Prepare fusilli according to package directions, ensuring that the pasta is cooked firm, rather than soft. Rinse with cold water and place in a large bowl.
Add vegetables and beans to bowl.
Pour avocado dressing over top and gently toss to combine.

Want to savor every bite of your favorite dishes? Not just SOME but EVERY bite? Try this homemade basil pesto sauce. It bursts with mouth-watering flavor. It’s won the world over with its aromatic nature of sweet basil, garlic, and Parmesan, and pairs nicely with your pasta dishes, pizzas, and sandwiches.
The great thing is, you don’t have to be a fancy chef to make it, especially with this recipe. We take you through the process, outlining each step as you transform a handful of ingredients into your new favorite Italian accoutrement.
This recipe is scalable so increase the amounts according to how much you’ll need.
Blend
Blend the garlic, pine nuts, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in the food processor until crumb forms.
Add
Add the basil and blend until smooth. Add the Parmesan and blend.
Drizzle
While blending, drizzle the olive oil in slowly through the spout.
Basil pesto is versatile and so can be added to a wide range of dishes. Some cooks love to toss it with a freshly cooked pasta (I incorporate it in this recipe for Turkey Meatballs). It’s also a key ingredient on a Caprese salad (or try my recipe for a Cauliflower Caprese Skillet). Mix into a risotto or grain bowl. Spread on sandwiches, wraps, or paninis. It also works well as a marinade for meat (try my Baked Salmon with Asian Cilantro Pesto) or vegetables. Add a dollop on top of pizza or flatbread. If you’re making a creamy soup, just swirl in some sauce.
Yes, instead of the cheese, you can use nutritional yeast and cashew nuts, or a plant-based Parmesan alternative.
You can add some extra olive oil to thin it out a bit.
You can totally make a nut-free basil pesto by swapping nuts with sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds. Or, if you want to ditch nuts or seeds altogether, just add a bit more Parmesan cheese and olive oil to get that perfect pesto texture.
Now, fresh basil is where it’s at—super vibrant and smells amazing. But if dried basil is all you’ve got, go for it! Just use 1/3 less since the flavor’s stronger.
To store your fab pesto creation in the fridge, put it in an airtight container and pour a teensy bit of olive oil on top to keep that gorgeous green color. It’ll last up to a week, perfect for a quick weeknight dinner!
You can also Freeze your pesto as long as you haven’t already added the parmesan cheese. I love using an ice cube tray! Cover with plastic wrap and freeze those little cubes. Once they’re solid, you can store them for up to 3 months in the freezer. When you’re ready to indulge, thaw the pesto-cubes, add some freshly grated cheese, and you’re good to go! Enjoy!

]]>I’ll show you how to find gluten free restaurants near you, in real time. This article on eating gluten free in Paris wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t also share the best dedicated gluten free bakeries in Paris, several delicious 100% gluten free restaurants in Paris, and tips for finding and ordering gluten free in other Parisian restaurants. I also cover gluten free in Versailles, gluten free crêperies in Paris and answer the age-old question: are macarons gluten free? I also give you some homemade gluten free French recipes to bring your trip to Paris home with you!
Lots of articles will list the best gluten free bakeries in Paris, but few will detail how to find real gluten free food options, as gluten free restaurants in Paris can be trickier to locate. You also need to make sure the articles you’re reading aren’t outdated, since restaurants can come and go, as can their gluten free menu items.
On my gluten free trip to Paris, I found it most helpful to learn how to locate gluten free restaurants for myself, as many peoples’ suggestions were outdated and often the gluten free restaurants they recommended were closed or nowhere near where I was staying or visiting – Paris is a huge city! In this post, I’ll show you how you can find safe gluten free food in Paris with updated options near you, wherever you may be!
One more important point about visiting Paris if you’re gluten free. You’ve probably read that Paris is only good for gluten free sweets and bakeries. Not true. I’ll help you find plenty of real gluten free food on your trip to Paris! So dive in, bookmark this page, and get excited to find gluten free food in Paris!
Before my recent trip to Paris, I read all the posts, bookmarked all the articles and made lists of all the top gluten free places to visit while I was there. But once I arrived in Paris, I realized that not only were several of those restaurants no longer open or not serving gluten free items any longer, many had odd hours which didn’t correspond to our travel schedule and most were not conveniently located near where we were staying or site-seeing.
No one wants to visit Paris and have their dietary restrictions dictate their trip or restrict their opportunity for seeing the world-class city and all its sites, so instead, we planned our trip and I found gluten free places to eat around those locations each day.
Thus, I ended up striking out on my own and starting my research from scratch each day while in Paris, depending on our current location. The best tool I found for locating gluten free restaurants near me in Paris was Google Maps. Not Google, but Google MAPS. Not Apple Maps, but GOOGLE MAPS.
Trust me, this little tip makes all the difference in the world, as Google Maps searches google for reviews using the key words you’re looking for and pulls those reviews into the search results as well, yielding far more results than any other search engine I used AND it found what was close to me when I needed to find gluten free food in Paris. Invaluable!
Here’s an example of my search using Google Maps in Paris: “gluten free near me”
I repeated this experiment using multiple search engines (Siri, Chrome, Apple Maps, Google Maps) and without fail, Google Maps found gluten free restaurants the other search engines did not. The added bonus here is that if you perform this search yourself while you’re in Paris, the restaurant information won’t be outdated.
Expand the view and you can see more information about specific restaurants; tap on one and you’ll see the hours and how far away it is from your current location. This tool was a lifesaver for us in finding gluten free food nearby in Paris, and allowed us to sightsee and find gluten free food while doing so, rather than having to structure our sightseeing around finding gluten free food.
Then use any map app to get walking directions to see how far you are from a particular gluten free restaurant to see if it’s going to fit into your plans.
In doing so, I also found many gluten free restaurants and other restaurants offering gluten free menu items which I had never seen mentioned in any articles I’d read about gluten free food in Paris. Goldmine!
Using the Google Maps feature, I was able to locate delicious and safe gluten free food near me in Paris each day we were there. Of course, there are legendary gluten free restaurants I wanted to patronize if we were close enough to make it work, but I didn’t intend to plan my trip around long journeys to those restaurants if I didn’t have to do so.
When we were unable to dine in a dedicated gluten free restaurant or one with a specific gluten free menu, I had no troubles explaining my needs to the wait staff at other restaurants and receiving safe meals – a Salade Niçoise on one occasion and a tofu curry dish on another.
Be sure to check the hours of each restaurant before traveling to dine there, as many closed quite early or had odd hours (many close at 2 or 3 pm, for example). If there is a particular dedicated gluten free bakery or restaurant you want to be sure not to miss, go early in the day.
Also, as many restaurants are not dedicated gluten-free, take these notes under advisement and only dine there if you feel comfortable after asking all the necessary questions and relating your needs to your server or to a manager.
And if all else fails, grab a handful of macarons (they’re gluten-free!) from a French Macaron stand and call it lunch!
These French Gluten Free Cards (also translated into other languages like German and Spanish) are super helpful to carry with you and hand to the waiter at any restaurant. Go here for a printable French Gluten Free Card to take with you on your trip!
Or simply tell your waiter: “Je dois manger sans gluten.” (I must eat gluten free) or “Je ne peux pas manger de gluten.” (I cannot eat gluten) And, if relevant, “J’ai la maladie coeliaque.” (I have celiac disease).
When looking at addresses in Paris, note the code after each street address; the last two digits denote the “arrondissement” or ward/district/precinct/municipality. This will get you in the right area to see if the gluten free restaurant you’ve found is close to where you are.
Paris is divided into twenty (actually now 17) arrondissements; each is known for certain attributes or landmarks and each has its own sub-governing bodies. They are useful when navigating the city, for geographical reference.
While not all of these Parisian restaurants are 100% gluten free, each offers gluten free foods, a gluten free menu or are dedicated gluten free, as noted. One interesting note: most of the dedicated gluten-free restaurants in Paris seem to have an Italian flair.
22 Av. Rapp 75007
Open daily.
This delightful Italian trattoria located within an easy walk of the Eiffel Tower is nearly 100% gluten free. The only menu items containing gluten are the pizzas. They are plainly called out on the menu as “avec gluten” (with gluten) while everything else on the menu – including the free bread placed on the table – is “sans gluten” (without gluten).
I ordered gluten-free Gnocchis de Pommes de Terre à L a Truffe Noire (potato gnocchi with black truffles) and it was fantastic. The seeded gluten free bread for the table was flavorful, dipped in oil and balsamic vinegar, and the whole experience was a treat! Absolutely the best meal I had in Paris.

Kapunka Cantine Thai Sans Gluten
51 rue Saint-Sauveur 75002

This dedicated gluten free hidden gem happened to be located within an easy walk of our hotel in the 2nd arrondissement. It also had plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. While the pad Thai wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, I am somewhat of a pad Thai connoisseur, so I wouldn’t blame them for not spicing it up the way I prefer.
It was nice to have a gluten free and vegan dessert option, so of course I indulged in the petit pot au choco, which was something like a chocolate mousse and was quite good.
Everything on the menu was gluten free; vegan items were written in green and items with meat were called out in bold.
105 rue Caulaincourt 75018

The Boulangerie offers classics like baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolate, brioche, madeleines, croquettes, scones and other breads.

We sampled several different pastries and enjoyed them throughout the day. I only wish I could have gone back for more the next day, as, in true French pastry fashion, these were best enjoyed fresh the day they were purchased.

Although most of us think sweet when we think crêpes, don’t overlook the opportunity to get a full meal at a Paris crêperie! Loads of savory options can fill a crêpe, so the only real choice becomes whether you have enough room for two!
When you return home and are craving crêpes, here’s a homemade gluten free savory crêpes recipe for you, and homemade gluten free sweet crêpes recipe for you, as well! The ones in Paris were all made with buckwheat flour, so I think you’ll find these homemade gluten free crêpes made with my gfJules Flour taste even better!
4 Rue du Faubourg Montmartre, 75009
1 Quai Saint-Michel – Paris 5ème

33 Rue de la harpe, 75005
See hours each day. This crêperie offers gluten-free and regular crêpes of all kinds – savory and sweet. The gluten-free crêpes are buckwheat-based and definitely have a buckwheat flavor, but are tasty, nonetheless. You could easily make a lunch out of one of their savory crêpes filled with potatoes and meats or just go for dessert and champagne!
Close to the Sorbonne and the legendary Shakespeare and Company bookstore on the Rive Gauche (left bank) Seine. Not dedicated gluten free.
24 Quai du Louvre, 75001
Buckwheat crêpes and waffles offered, along with regular waffles, pancakes and crêpes. Many vegetarian options available. Not dedicated gluten free.
Macarons are a classic French cookie made from whipped egg whites (meringues) and ground almonds and/or almond flour, so they have always been naturally gluten free. Rejoice, as there are macaron stands on many a corner throughout Paris.
Always double-check the ingredients (especially if you have other food allergies as well), as most macarons contain dairy, and many contain soy and other tree nuts. Most macaron stands have dairy-free or vegan flavor options, though.
Ladurée is the most omnipresent storefront, but there are certainly others, with macaron booths in the Louvre, Versailles, the Tour Eiffel and probably just about every other major tourist destination (and in the airport for gluten free snacks on the flight home!).
Ladurée also has a stand-out flagship storefront on the Champs Elysée.
If you’d like to try your hand at making homemade gluten free macarons at home, they’re not difficult to make, but you’ll certainly impress all your friends!
Here’s my gluten free Macaron Recipe!
The experience of seeing Paris from its heart — the river Seine — is not one to be missed if you have the time. There are hour-long day trips down the Seine to see the landmarks, “lunchbox” cruises (nothing gluten free here), champagne cruises, brunch cruises, and a romantic dinner cruise. I didn’t investigate the brunch cruise, but I imagine there could be some gluten-free options if you inquired; the dinner cruise was remarkably accommodating.
There are various packages (including one contemplating a marriage proposal!), and the dinner service varies, but I was able to select 3 courses which all had gluten-free and dairy-free options. The dessert was simply a fruit plate, but it was a nice one. Combined with the live music on-board and the top-notch service, it was a wonderful experience all around.
Whether with gluten free food or just a simple river cruise, you need to make time for a trip on a Bateau Mouche! And now you know there are gluten free meal options there, too!
8 Av. du Général de Gaulle 78000 Versailles
Open 7 days
Nothing on the menu is “gluten free” except salads … until you ask the waiter! Then they bring you the special gluten free spaghetti — handled separately — and topped with a delicious house-made sauce. The restaurant makes their other pastas and it was clear that the homemade (gluten-full) spaghetti was not the same as what was served to me, so I felt more confident diving into my bowl of delicious pasta. Upon my insistent questioning, the waiter also assured me in French and in English that the gluten-free pasta would be prepared in separate pasta water and with separate utensils.

Nothing overtly gluten free about this restaurant, but easy to order grilled fish and vegetables “sans gluten”.
Upon your return, you’ll surely be missing those gluten free baguettes, croissants, crêpes and macarons. Luckily I have recipes for you to make them all at home! Bring your gluten free Paris experience into your kitchen and you’ll feel like you never left (well, sortof)!

Looking for more sugar-free, low-carb, or keto treats? Have a look at some of my other recipes.
If you double or triple the recipe, it’s best to layer the chocolate blueberry frozen yogurt treats in an air-tight container layered with parchment paper.
Store in the coldest area of the freezer for up to two weeks.
Can I use frozen blueberries?
I’ve never tried making my recipe with frozen blueberries, but I’d avoid them.
The reason is that the ice crystals will add moisture to the recipe, potentially sabotaging it.
Any fresh fruit combination chosen for this recipe must be washed and dried thoroughly.
Do I have to use Greek Yogurt?
No, you can use any yogurt you like, although a higher fat content offers a creamier product.
I used a 0% Oikos high-protein Greek Yogurt for this recipe and can confirm it works but not as creamy.
Can I use another oil other than coconut to make a hard chocolate shell?
It’s best to use refined coconut oil for high heat.
As temperature drops, saturated fats harden, and coconut oil, in particular, turns firm, almost glassy, when cold.

]]>It’s January 2020, and I have just visited Paapa’s house in Kumasi, Ghana, where some plantains have just been cut down from our tree. I am looking for a name for a new Pan-African concept that I’ve been developing on Post-it notes and in my head, and I don’t really know anything other than the fact that I want the name to align with my favourite ingredient, the plantain, because I find it synonymous with the black experience back home and in the diaspora generally. Those plantains are later served to us as tatale, or plantain pancakes. The rest, as they say, is history …
Akwasi Brenya-Mensa is chef/patron of Tatale, a contemporary Pan-African dining concept.
Continue reading...]]>Actor, writer, comedian and activist — Elliot Page wears many hats. No stranger to critical and commercial success, thanks to his stint in Netflix’s hit series Umbrella Academy (2009-present), the actor has appeared in over 30 titles. With shocking revelations in his memoir Pageboy catapulting him back to the limelight in 2023, it is worth looking at some of the most interesting facts about Elliot Page, including his net worth.
From his role in Juno (2007), which made him a household name to his performances in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi film Inception (2010), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Tallulah (2016), Page has built a career graph that is continually on the rise.
However, it wasn’t till the release of Pageboy, which hit the shelves on 6 June 2023, that fans got a peek into the private life of the actor. From his relationship with actress Kate Mara to the challenges of coming out and transitioning, the memoir holds a mirror to the person behind the onscreen portrayals.
While the actor has made his mark on Hollywood over the years, he is actually from the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Born Ellen Philpotts Page, on 21 February 1987 in Halifax, he was born to Martha Philpotts and Dennis Page. While Martha is a teacher, Dennis is a graphic designer.
Growing up as a child of divorce, Page went through a lot of back and forth. He attended the Halifax Grammar School till tenth grade and then went to Queen Elizabeth High School. He graduated from the Shambhala School in 2005 and enrolled at Vaughan Road Academy to study the Interact Program for two years.
Talking about the toll it took on him in a 2022 interview, Page told Esquire, “When I left Halifax to go to Toronto in grade eleven, I thought the bullying would lessen… And that wasn’t the case at all. If you’re getting teased and made fun of and called names on a daily basis, there’s no way that’s not going to get inside of you.”
As a kid, Page loved playing soccer and “loved the discipline”. He enjoyed teamwork and as an avid learner was also inclined towards its spiritual aspect and “what it means to find and create empty space,” he told Esquire.
Page recalls “having a blast” while playing “soccer, touch football, outback during recess and lunch.” Although he enjoyed being on the fields with the boys, he was eventually forced to shift to the girls’ team owing to his assigned sex.
Assigned female at birth, Page publicly came out as gay in 2014, and later as a transman in December 2020. Speaking to PEOPLE, he said, “Today I definitely feel a way that I never thought I would get to feel. I think that mostly manifests in how present I feel. The sort of ease and the ability to exist.”
Since the transition, Page adopted the pronouns he/him. Speaking about this journey with Esquire, he said “I can’t overstate the biggest joy, which is really seeing yourself. I know I look different to others, but to me, I’m just starting to look like myself.” He added, “So the greatest joy is just being able to feel present, literally, just to be present. To go out in a group of new people and be able to engage in a way where I didn’t feel this constant sensation to flee from my body, this never-ending sensation of anxiety and nervousness and wanting out.”
While delivering a speech at the Time To Thrive Conference by Human Rights Campaign, the actor, who went by Ellen at the time, spoke about his support for the LGBTQ+ community. Page also confessed he regretted waiting for so long to reveal his true self on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2014.
In April 2021, he made his first television appearance since coming out as trans when he sat down with Oprah Winfrey in The Oprah Conversation on Apple TV+ to talk about his journey. Page also spoke about the need for proper representation of the trans community and the importance of revoking the anti-trans bill in the US.
As a queer advocate, he has openly criticised debates about gay marriage. In a 2019 interview with The Independent, Page said, “Gay marriage… it’s not a debate. Whether you have the religious right to f***ing not serve a queer person or a trans person, that’s not a debate. And the media needs to stop treating it like it’s a debate.”
He is also a pro-choice feminist and upholds the values of equality, liberty and freedom, apart from being a mental health advocate. Taking a stand against human rights violations in 2008, he was one of the 30 celebrities who appeared in a series of online advertisements for the US campaign against the military dictatorship in Myanmar.
Esquire quotes him saying, “Activism, for me, feels natural and organic. It feels worse when I’m not actively engaged. And I don’t think it stems from feeling some sort of pressure or obligation… I like to think I’m an empathetic person.”
In a chapter titled “Famous A-hole At Party”, the Trailer Park Boys (2001-2018) alum talks about a celebrity acquaintance, who said, “You aren’t gay. That doesn’t exist. You are just afraid of men,” and added, “I’m going to f**k you to make you realize you aren’t gay.”
Additionally, Page recalled the time he fell for his My Days of Mercy (2007) co-star Mara while she was dating Max Minghella. As per a US Magazine report, Mara told Minghella, “I never thought I could be in love with two people and now I know I can.” Page reportedly fell for the House of Cards (2013-2018) star right after he came out as gay. Still very close to each other, he wrote, “I think the love and care that we have for each other is its very own special thing.”
The book also talks about his deep friendship with actors Catherine Keener — who helped him during the filming of An American Crime (2007) and let him live with her during the overwhelming Juno award season. He also wrote about Whip It (2009) co-stars Kristin Wiig and Alia Shawkat and how they helped him cope with work, life and everything in between.
Pageboy also sheds light on Page’s relationship with a closeted co-star. He wrote, “We loved each other and that was very real in our bubble… But feeling hidden was far too painful. That was impossible and not a sustainable relationship at all. And it taught me that I was not gonna do that again.”
Among the many revelations in his book, the There’s Something in the Water (2019) director wrote about his marriage to dancer Emma Portner. They tied the knot in 2018 but called it quits in 2021. As per US Magazine, Page revealed the relationship delayed him coming to terms with his true self and embracing his real gender identity.
“If a part of you is always separate if existing in your body feels unbearable — love is an irresistible escape,” he wrote in the book and added, “I felt that Emma’s emotions always took precedence over mine. This, I am certain, was purposeful on my part. The avoidance, the running, the numbing, the disassociating — all of my nifty tactics at their best. Harmful for me and harmful for them. And ultimately, it had nothing to do with Emma.”
Page was just 20 when his breakthrough performance in Juno earned him an Academy Award nomination in 2007. The film was a major critical and financial success and Page received a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress — Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.
He also bagged a Canadian Comedy Award and two Teen Choice Awards in the best actress category. Among numerous critics’ awards were accolades from the Detroit Film Critics Society, Austin Film Critics Association and Florida Film Critics Circle.
The actor is slated to star in the indie drama Close To You, which wrapped production in Canada in June and will be voice acting in the upcoming film Naya Legend of the Golden Dolphin in 2025.
Page hosted his Hulu documentary series Gaycation (2016–2017) along with Ian Daniel and bagged two Primetime Emmy Awards for the same. The co-hosts would hit the streets to learn about the vast spectrum of LGBTQ+ experiences and explore real-life stories of love, struggle and victory.
Page also served as the executive producer for the series.
In 2013, Page appeared in a video game called Beyond: Two Souls as a voice and motion capture actor. He describes it as one of his most demanding roles — the script itself was 2,000 pages long. Page went on to receive five award nominations including a British Academy Games Award for Performer in 2014.
A 2013 video posted by Team Conan O’Brien, shows Page displaying incredible juggling skills on Conan. When asked how the actor picked up the skill, he said, growing up on film sets meant a lot of free time and he would juggle when lonely to keep himself entertained.
It comes as no surprise that such a multi-faceted star, with major box-office success, television, films and author credits, Elliot Page would have a whopping net worth. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Page has a fortune of USD 8 million as of June 2023.
Besides his acting stints, the star’s wealth also comes from his production company, Page Boy Productions, which was launched in 2021.
Elliot Page is reportedly vegan and in 2014, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) named him one of the sexiest vegetarians of the year.
Although his Umbrella Academy character might be able to play the violin virtuosically in the Netflix series, the actor reportedly can’t. Instead, he plays the guitar and also sings well. In fact, he has starred in a number of music videos.

]]>After bags and perfumes, we dive into the world of quiet luxury skincare. These are the skincare products that not only look elegant in your vanity kit but also glide beautifully onto your skin with plenty of beauty benefits.
The quiet luxury trend may refer to logo-less, elegant, and timeless design for fashion items. When it comes to quiet luxury skincare, we expect high-performing products that don’t go wild on the ingredients list, but rather include only the bare necessities. The package design, like quiet luxury fashion, is elegant and unassuming, making for a reliable beauty essential you can grab and apply everyday.
The wisdom of Philosophy lies in its high-performance yet gentle formulas that are suitable for sensitive skin. Through intensive skincare research, all of Philosophy’s products don’t only target long-term effects but are also eco-responsible, cruelty-free, clean, and multi-tasking. The brand is committed to becoming more sustainable every year, by aiming to offset 100% carbon emission and ensuring a 100% renewable packaging. One of the best sellers is the Anti-Wrinkle Miracle Worker+, a powerful moisturiser that counteracts stress-induced bumpy skin and fine lines.
Minimalism is not only visible on the packaging of Less’s products but also their skincare formulas, for each of the products contains only active ingredients and never any additives. The result is a comprehensible staple that fights effectively against ageing, since the excessive use of superfluous products is sometimes the culprit for premature ageing. If you’re looking for your first vegan, cruelty-free, and plastic-free quiet luxury skincare staple from Less, the Less Face Oil is among the most popular ones.
The vision of Allies of Skin is to make beauty more human, which particularly means to make everyone feel empowered in their own skin. Founded by Nicolas Travis, the premium skincare brand started with the first and very popular Peptides & Antioxidants Firming Daily Treatment, before evolving to bring more supercharged products to the market.
Biossance has much love for the ocean and nature, so the brand’s core idea is the refrain from over 2,000 ingredients that are harmful to the environment. The most prominent one of them is squalene, a substance found in shark liver. Biossance, in contrast to other beauty brands, has created its own vegan squalane made from sustainable fermented sugarcane, that is incorporated in many of its products. The beautiful Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil doesn’t only brighten the skin but also boosts its elasticity.
The lab-like containers and the shop design of Aesop are almost always recognisable from afar. The brand’s quiet luxury skincare is constituted upon the belief that our skin is ever-changing, so customers are encouraged to take the attentive approach to understand their own skin at any particular time in their lives. A range of hair and body care products by Aesop are highly praised, but the crowd’s forever favourite line is the Parsley Seed collection.

One of, if not THE best way to learn about Odawa Mnis (Manitoulin Island) is by taking a tour with Wikwemikong Tourism. They have a number of options depending on your interests! They must be booked in advance and you can do so on their website here.
If you’re going to participate in any of the tours on this list, it should be The Unceded Journey. On this tour, participants will learn about the true history of Manitoulin Island dating back centuries. You will learn about how Wikwemikong became the only Unceded Territory to be recognized federally by Canada. There is so much information to absorb as you learn about the arrival of the Jesuits, the impact of the Royal Proclamation of 1763, important treaties such as the Bond Head Treaty of 1836 and the Treaty of 1862, along with other important dates in 1975, 1986 and 2006 – all of which have shaped the area into what you see today.
You will also be taught about the Residential School System and its aftermath. The Unceded Journey tour will focus on the residential schools around the Great Lakes as well as in Northern Ontario, giving you a unique perspective on how much it still affects Indigenous communities to this very day. I was blown away by our guide Jack’s willingness to share about his own journey to overcome these impacts. It truly made the tour incredibly memorable and I think I can speak for everyone on our tour when I say it’s an experience we will never forget.
I’m not going into too specific of details because this really is a tour you need to experience yourself! You will learn so much that isn’t taught in history books in just a few short hours. Whether you are visiting on vacation, a newcomer to Canada, or have been born and raised here, this is a tour everyone should take.
One of Wikwemikong’s newest experiences, this is the perfect way to reconnect with the land. Visitors will forage for seasonal ingredients found along the forest floor with your guide which will then be used in your culinary experience! Indigenous communities relied on the plants and medicines found in the area for their vitamin and mineral intake and these culinary experiences will give you a glimpse of that.
Afterwards, head to the stunning Outdoor Culinary Space where your meal will be prepared over an open fire. This isn’t a show for you to watch though as you’ll be right in there cooking alongside your Indigenous guide! Who knows, you might just learn a trick or two that you’ll take home and add to your own meals. Wikwemikong currently has three culinary offerings for you to choose from, all of which come with a herbal tea made from foraged ingredients.
Clay Baked Georgian Bay Trout – Guests will enjoy fresh Georgian Bay trout stuffed with sage, mint, sumac and honey which is then wrapped in plantain leaves, covered in clay and baked in hot coals.
Cedar Plank Georgian Bay Trout – Cooked over a cedar plank, fresh Georgian Bay trout is seasoned with sage, mint and sumac, glazed with maple syrup and served with wild rice.
Stoned Cooked Venison – If you’re not one for fish, you will be treated to hearty venison cooked over an open fire on flat rock stone which is then served with wild foraged edibles and mushrooms.
INSIDER TIP: The culinary experiences can be booked as an add-on for The Unceded Journey. Chances are you’ll work up an appetite as you learn so I highly recommend doing this!
Unfortunately due to a scarily early wildfire season, there was a fire ban in place for Northern Ontario during my visit so I was unable to truly experience this tour. However, my mind, body and spirit were still well-fed thanks to Luke and Vince of Wikwemikong Tourism as they provided an incredible venison chili that came straight from the land! I also enjoyed some blueberry wild rice and enjoyed everything with some delicious cedar tea.
This experience begins at the Bebamikawe Memorial Trailhead. Named in honour of Onezime Bebamikawe (translating to leaving a path or footprints), he was a veteran of World War II and a prominent figure in Wikwemikong. He, alongside four others, lost their lives due to a tragic accident in 1971 and this trail was created to remember them by. It is also a fantastic way to teach those who explore the trails about Indigenous traditions as there are numerous interpretive signs throughout including a gathering space that shares about clan governance right at the start of the trail.
SOMETHING TO NOTE: You can explore this trail without a guide, however taking a guided tour will elevate your experience to a whole new level.
Stretch your legs and learn how Manitoulin is home to one of the most diverse plant ecosystems in all of North America! Your guide will share about both practical and medicinal uses for a number of plants found along the trail. While the terrain for this hike is easy, there is some elevation so it will get the blood flowing! Make your way to the top where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the traditional Fishing Islands of the Anishinaabe from the Nadweh Lookout. You’ll also spot Point Grondine where you can go camping and enjoy some of their amazing hiking trails.
Your guide will then share why this area is so special and share some of the oral histories of these lands. Captivating tales of encounters with voyageurs, battles with the Iroquois and the infamous Manitoulin Incident await!
While the above tours are the main experiences you can enjoy with Wikwemikong, they have a few other offerings as well. They’re certainly on my radar for a future visit!
Bay of the Beaver – Learn about what lies beneath the brilliant waters of Georgian Bay with the Bay of the Beaver Tour. Participants will hear stories and learn about traditions while paddling ancient canoe routes utilized by the Anishinaabe. Take in the sights and sounds of the historic Wiikwemkoong fishing islands during this half-day tour.
Paddle the Night Sky – Departing from Meeshkodewaang (Prairie Point), enjoy an evening paddle as you explore the shores of Georgian Bay from the water. Your guide will share traditional teachings surrounding aquatic plants and medicines until the magnificent colours of golden hour transform into night. As darkness falls, listen to the stories and legends of the water spirits, the history of the area’s trading routes and the fierce ancient battles with the Iroquois. This tour is only offered a handful of times (August 15 and 22 in 2023!) so if you have your heart set on it, be sure to book ASAP!
If you’re unable to secure a tour or are looking to stop by Wikwemikong on your own time while exploring Manitoulin Island, there is still plenty to see and do!
Mishibinijima Art Gallery – Visitors will be blown away by the incredible talent of Ojibway artist James Simon Mishibinijima. Located just off Wikwemikong Way at 426 Lakeshore Road, this gallery is bursting with colour. Intricately detailed paintings adorn every wall with each one captivating the viewer. If a picture is worth a thousand words then James’ paintings have even more stories to share! Spend some time admiring his paintings representing specific places like Mackinac Island and ideologies such as the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
Rainbow Ridge Golf Course – If spending some time on the green is part of a perfect day for you then you’ll want to tackle the 18 holes on the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course! Just outside of the territory, it is owned and operated by Wikwemikong. I’ve heard this course is no cakewalk as golfers will enjoy 6,424 yards of golf from the longest tees with a par of 72. It’s said the first nine holes are the most challenging so once you get through them, it should be smooth sailing!
Wikwemikong Gift Shop – No trip to Wikwemikong is complete without stopping at the gift shop! Here you will find 100% authentically Indigenous-made items including artwork, crafts, jewellery and more. The majority of the items are made by local artisans from Odawa Mnis (Manitoulin Island) and by purchasing these items, you’re directly supporting the local community. Take a look at their website for a sample of the incredible talent found on the island!
Experience a Pow Wow – As summer arrives, Pow Wow season begins! There are a number of events across Odawa Mnis, two of which are hosted by Wikwemikong. The first occurs mid-June and is a traditional event that’s hosted by one of the satellite communities. The second occurs during the August long weekend and is a large competitive event where dancers come from across Turtle Island (North America) to compete. To attend is an honour and a privilege – plus you might just see the incredibly talented Rolling Thunder Dance Traditions as they proudly represent Odawa Mnis!
RELATED: If you have never attended a Pow Wow before, I highly recommend reading my first-timer guide to familiarize yourself with the traditions so that you can be a respectful guest.
As of right now, Wikwemikong does not have an official option for accommodation. With the popularity of Airbnb and VRBO, you may be able to find some options that way. However, Manitoulin Island does have an Indigenous-owned and operated hotel – it’s just in Little Current!
A short drive away, the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre is a great option for exploring Wikwemikong as well as Manitoulin Island. Step inside and guests will be treated to a stunning foyer inspired by the local landscape and Indigenous traditions. Paintings depicting the Seven Grandfather Teachings adorn the walls and a stunning fireplace is at the centre of a round seating area, enticing all who enter to gather as a community. Outside guests can enjoy a seat on the patio and enjoy beautiful views of Lake Huron’s North Channel and take a dip in the seasonal outdoor pool.
Inside each room, you’ll find a number of great amenities that makes this the perfect spot to call home base while exploring Odawa Mnis. Decorated with brilliant Indigenous artwork, each room has a desk complete with a comfy work chair, a Keurig machine, flatscreen TV and a large cupboard which came in handy when I got rained on during my visit. Plus you have a refrigerator as well as a microwave which I was very thankful for so I could reheat my leftovers! Rooms vary between two queen beds, one king bed as well as a king suite that also has an additional seating area.
While breakfast is not included with your stay, I highly recommend enjoying a meal at the hotel restaurant, North 46. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, guests can enjoy a number of meals utilizing locally sourced ingredients. Both gluten-free and vegan options are available. Their bison steak is very popular though I’m impartial to their Anishinaabe Taco and Manitoulin Whitefish. Take a look at the menu and you’ll certainly find something that tickles your tastebuds!
If the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre is unavailable during your dates, take a look at other hotels on Manitoulin Island via Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia or VRBO.
Whether you were born in what is now Canada or you’re visiting from another country, it’s important to remember that you are a guest in Wikwemikong. Treat everyone and everything with respect and leave any place you visit better than you left it! If you’re looking to visit Wikwemikong yourself, here are some things to know that will help you plan your visit.
Wikwemikong is located on the eastern side of Manitoulin Island and can be accessed by car from Highway 6. Turn onto Meredith Street in Manitowaning and follow Cardwell Street until it turns into Wikwemikong Way as you arrive in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.
Wikwemikong is in reference to the First Nation that lives on the land whereas Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory is in reference to the territory itself and reflects the traditional pronunciation and spelling.
Tours can be booked from June to October and exact dates vary each year. It’s best to reach out via their website for exact availability!
No, you can visit whenever you like! Tours will certainly enhance your experience and understanding while in the territory but you don’t need to book a tour in order to visit.

Chilled Watermelon Soup RECIPE
Why This Recipe Works
This soup takes heavy inspiration from the flavors of gazpacho, a chilled mixture of chopped vegetables marinated in seasoned vinegar. Cooling, light, and hydrating, it's the perfect refreshing dinner for a hot summer night and is just as appropriate for lunch the next day. Juicy watermelon is the undisputed star; a few sprigs of basil, some bell pepper, and a tomato work together to balance the melon's sweetness, keeping the soup's flavor firmly in savory territory. To meld all the flavors and give the soup its chill in record time, we turn to our trusty blender. Pureeing the ingredients results in a soup with rounded, well integrated flavor that comes together in minutes rather than the hours it would take if we were to simply chop the vegetables and stir them together. Another blending bonus: It allows us to incorporate a few handfuls of ice into the soup, chilling the gazpacho without a lengthy refrigeration. Serve with crusty bread or crackers.
Serves 2
Total Time 15 minutes
¼ cup fresh basil leaves, plus extra for serving
½ cup ice (2 ounces)
2 cups 1-inch watermelon pieces
1 red, orange, or yellow bell pepper, halved, stemmed, and seeded
1 tomato, cored
¼ teaspoon pepper
⅛ teaspoon table salt
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
½ teaspoon red wine vinegar

Kerala Onam Sadya Dish | Kerala kootu curry | Kootukari recipe | Onam sadya menu | Easy Sides | Vegan Side dish | Curry with yam and plantain | Curry with yam and chickpeas | Vegetarian side dish | Vegetable and lentil Curry | How to make kootukari | Onam Kootu Curry recipe
[feast_advanced_jump_to]Sadya means banquet in Malayalam. Sadya is typically served as a traditional feast for Onam, the state festival of Kerala and Vishu
I have an affinity for Sadya. The rich and detailed spread of all dish vegetarian. A variety of stews, sambar, rasam, dry curries, kheers, pickles and raita. One might wonder, how come there is so many vegetarian dishes on that banana leaf.
My dear friend Rafeeda of The big sweet tooth, has made a detailed post on Onam sadya for dummies, you can read about it here.
Here in Dubai, during sadya time, there will be so many restaurants hosting sadya menu for the weekend, to find a table during that time would be such a hard time. I know few friends who cook a storm during Onam.
The preparations start a day or two ahead. Fresh masala's are made, vegetables are chopped according to the dishes, pickles made the previous day. Such a wonderful process isn't? Just imagine the aroma and the memories created during these preparation, such a bliss.
This kootu curry is something which I would prefer for my lunch with steaming hot rice, My hubby loved with both rice and roti, whereas both my kiddos preferred the curry with rice.
If you keep the veggies and the chana ready, it just takes 20 minutes to make this curry. Such a quick and breezy curry make during the morning rush hour.
The vegetables used for making this kootu kari may differ in each house hold. Some of them use ash gourd and yellow pumpkin too. But most common vegetables are Raw banana and Yam along with black chickpeas.

When you have young children, you know that road trip snacks for kids are a must.
Now that school’s out, the weather is warm, people may opt for road trips over flights, when possible.
When you have kids, I won’t lie – it’s often easier to travel by car. You can pack everything you need and have more flexible departure and arrival times.
However, you cannot forget the snacks!
We have 60+ ideas for both homemade and storebought toddler travel snacks and travel snacks for kids.
Snacks for traveling with kids and kids road trip snacks cannot be underemphasized.
They are a necessity!
And so that brings up the topic of, What are the best kids road trip snacks?
We drove down to North Carolina a few weeks ago and we prepped and packed some homemade road trip snacks, paired with some of our favorite Thrive Market picks.
With kids especially, we try to pack plenty of kid friendly car snacks and if we’re stopping, plan for healthy road trip meals.
It never hurts to have an abundance of road trip food ideas!
I pretty much always pack snacks everywhere (have I mentioned my nickname in college was “Snacks?”) so I’m very well-versed on this topic and packing kid snacks for roadtrips.
I usually take stock of what we have in the pantry and fridge (fruit makes for a very portable snack), and I’ll go from there.
When we’re in the car, I’m a little bit more of a stickler than normal about what the kids eat.
For my kids car snacks, I tend to moderate sugar intake more because I don’t want to keep stopping or have them snack the whole time.
Sure, fast food can be enjoyable for a couple of meals, but the cost eventually adds up, and a lot of it may leave you feeling sluggish and exhausted.
Keep these tips in mind as you choose your kids road trip snacks.
Don’t forget to think about how you’ll store these snacks!
We like to have an insulated cooler of some sort for colder snacks and to keep things from getting squished.
I also recommend having something for them to be able to hold and/or open themselves.
We love bentgo boxes that they can hold, especially those that come with a cooler!
I love this snack spinner for kids to have a hard stop of some options.
I like to give them variety too. It’s also fun to use so keeps them busy!
You want to make sure to include some protein, healthy fat and fiber in your road trip snacks for kids (and yourself)!
Everyone will feel better that way and not be continuously asking for a snack when they feel satisfied after eating.
We tend to stop somewhere for meals although I’m sure it’s possible to pack non perishable road trip food.
We’ll just aim for a balanced road trip meal, and include healthy family road trip snacks when we can (like these healthy banana oatmeal cookies).
Being in a sitting position for a long period of time is hard for anyone, let along kids! We always plan breaks to stop and stretch.
For kids, I recommend finding a playground or rest area with grass to run around and picnic tables to sit at.
Another fun way to find snacks for the road trip is to incorporate a gas station or grocery store as your stop, and let each kid pick one snack!
This has worked really well for us because we’re moving around and the kids get excited to choose something new.
Your choices of snacks may vary depending on the age of your kids.
For younger kids and toddlers, packing food for a road trip is much easier with these options.
Usually, for us, the best road trip snacks for toddlers are storebought things like:
If we’re making our own granola, we’ll do maple cinnamon granola or protein granola and that usually suffices as one of our favorite family road trip snacks that we all snack on from a stasher bag.
I’m also the mom who brings at least one cooler so we often have refrigerated road trip snacks for kids, too.
When I’m packing snacks for myself, I draw alot from these breastfeeding night snacks!
We also try to include some refrigerated car snacks for kids since many of these are easy ways to get protein!
As a Registered Dietitian, some of my favorites from the list above are:
All of those make great car snacks for toddlers because if toddlers aren’t getting protein or healthy fats, they will keep asking for more food!
We love making lots of these no bake healthy snacks, and relying on lots of oat-based baked goods as food to bring on a road trip.
Many people prefer to make homemade snacks for road trips, which is awesome.
I recommend pulling from these healthy homemade toddler snacks and ideas!
I’ll be the first to grab a snack-sized pack of Goldfish or Oreos, but if you’re looking to add some variety to your snack game, I have some delicious and healthy homemade options for family road trip snacks.
These items also check the box for nonmessy snacks for road trips, which is important in our car!
Wherever you’re heading this road trip season, I hope you make memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
And along the way, happy snacking!
]]>The famous seasonal Chick-fil-A peach milkshakes are back on the menu again.
And while they taste good for the few minutes they last, even a small restaurant peach milkshake packs in 620 calories, 20 grams of fat, 13 grams of saturated fat, 101 grams of carbs, and over 100 grams of sugar. And that’s just for the small!
Do your health a favor and skip the fast food version.
This homemade healthy peach milkshake is thick, creamy, and extra delicious, without all the empty calories, fat, high fructose corn syrup, or artificial flavors.
Also try these Banana Oatmeal Cookies
Since they do not make a vegan Chick-fil-A milkshake, I’ve never tried the original. So I asked a group of friends who have tried both versions to tell me their thoughts.
One friend summed up everyone’s opinion the following way:
“The healthy version tastes just as good as the real thing, and the milkshake texture is just as thick and creamy.
While it doesn’t taste exactly the same, it more than satisfies my craving for a Chick-fil-A peach milkshake, and I don’t feel at all deprived.”

Above, watch the healthy peach milkshake recipe video
Unlike a fast food milkshake, this one calls for just three ingredients.
It has no corn syrup, mono and diglycerides, guar gum, caramel color, sorbitol, red #40, sodium benzoate, cellulose gum, corn starch, or carrageenan, which are all Chick-fil-A peach shake ingredients.
This light peach milkshake recipe calls for vanilla frozen yogurt, milk of choice, and fresh, frozen, or canned sliced peaches. That’s it.
Feel free to replace the frozen yogurt with homemade Greek frozen yogurt, or other flavors like orange, blueberry, strawberry frozen yogurt or peach frozen yogurt.
For a more decadent dessert with an even richer texture, you can also substitute an equal amount of vanilla ice cream or vegan ice cream for the frozen yogurt.
Of course the ice cream version will not be quite as wholesome as the option with yogurt, but I believe decadent desserts in moderation can be part of a healthy diet.
For a dairy free and plant based milkshake, simply use your favorite nondairy brand of frozen yogurt or vanilla ice cream.
Or you can use Almond Milk Ice Cream, Oat Milk Ice Cream, or Coconut Ice Cream.
Vegan milk of choice options include full fat or low fat canned coconut milk, or rice milk, cashew milk, soy milk, or unsweetened almond milk for a low calorie milkshake.
As well as being egg free, dairy free, and vegan, the healthy fruit shake can also be soy free, nut free, added sugar free, refined sugar free, and gluten free.
One of the best things about this healthy peach dessert is that you can enjoy it all year long, not just in the hot summer months when peaches are in season.
If using fresh peaches or canned peaches, I like to freeze them after slicing. You can peel the peaches or use unpeeled peaches for added fiber.
For a peach drink with frozen peaches, you do not need to thaw the fruit. Simply open the bag and throw the peach slices into the blender as-is.
*If you only have a personal single serving blender, such as a Magic Bullet or Nutribullet, use unfrozen or thawed peaches, because these smaller blenders may not be able to handle hard frozen fruit.
While it is not required to freeze the peach slices first, freezing them will yield a thicker milkshake. This step can be done days or even weeks in advance.
To make the healthy milkshake, throw everything except optional garnishes into a blender. Blend until completely smooth.
If you want to add texture, you can stir about half a cup of finely diced peaches into the shake with a spoon after blending.
Pour the thick peach shakes into tall glasses, or turn them into peach smoothie bowls if you prefer. Garnish as desired, with homemade whipped cream and a cherry, graham cracker crumbs, or anything else you desire.
This healthy recipe makes two large peach milkshakes.
Still craving peaches? Try this Peach Crisp
You can drink your copycat peach milkshake plain or topped with any one or more of the following garnishes:
Granola
Maraschino cherries
Caramel sauce
Rolled oats or quick oats
Graham crackers
Sliced peaches or bananas
Thanks to the yogurt, this is already a high protein milkshake, packing in over 16 grams of protein per serving.
For an even higher protein shake, add one scoop of your favorite protein powder.
Recommended flavors that go with peaches include maple, vanilla, brown sugar, cherry, coffee, or caramel protein powder.
My preference is to use unflavored plain protein powder in this shake, because it allows the sweet natural peach flavor to take center stage.
I have never tried using chocolate protein powder so have no idea how that specific flavor combination would taste. But now that I’m thinking about it, a chocolate covered peach milkshake sounds quite tasty!
For an even healthier option, you can omit the frozen yogurt and replace it with four frozen bananas or a packed two cups of Banana Ice Cream.
If you are not a banana fan, frozen pineapple or mango work as well.
Or you can use non frozen regular or Greek vanilla yogurt. If using an unsweetened yogurt, you will most likely need to add sweetener of choice, such as pure maple syrup, honey, or brown sugar, to taste.
If you’d like to measure the milkshake using a food scale instead of measuring cups, here are the weights to use:
180 grams sliced peaches, 270 grams frozen yogurt, and 60 grams milk of choice.
