Tap Shoe Care: A Step-by-Step Guide for Dancers
As a tap dancer, your shoes are your most precious possession. They allow you to express yourself through rhythm and movement, so it's essential to keep them in tip-top condition. In this article, I'll share my top tips for tap shoe care, ensuring your shoes last longer and perform at their best.
Essential Tools for Tap Shoe Care
- Soft-bristled brush
- Tap shoe polish
- Soft cloth
- Shoe laces
- Shoe trees (optional)
Step-by-Step Tap Shoe Care
1. Cleaning Your Shoes
After every dance session, use a soft-bristled brush to remove any dirt or debris from the shoes. This will prevent scratches and damage to the leather.
2. Polishing Your Shoes
Regularly polish your tap shoes using a tap shoe polish. This will help protect the leather, maintain its shine, and prevent cracking. Apply a thin layer and buff it with a soft cloth.
3. Tapping Plate Maintenance
The tapping plates on your shoes are subject to wear and tear. Inspect them regularly for loose screws or broken rivets. Tighten any loose screws and replace any broken rivets as soon as possible.
4. Lacing Your Shoes
Use strong shoe laces and lace your shoes securely. This will provide support and prevent the shoes from slipping off during dance routines.
5. Using Shoe Trees
Shoe trees can help maintain the shape of your shoes and absorb moisture. Insert shoe trees into your shoes after each use and allow them to dry completely.
6. Storage
Store your tap shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This will prevent the leather from drying out and cracking.
